Knee Replacement Surgery: Complementary and Traditional Medicine Working Together Energy Medicine, Emotional Freedom Techniques and Reiki This is a case, which shows how incorporating Energy Medicine, Emotional Freedom Techniques and Reiki together provided complementary healing and support with traditional medicine, surgery and physical therapies. C.M. is a client at Ways to Wellness. She began her work with Reiki sessions. Various intentions for healing had been held around general health and well being, and maintaining healthy mental and emotional attitudes. Knowing that knee replacement surgery was inevitable, we began to focus on balancing the body with positive and strong physical energy. Weight had been an issue and a certain amount needed to be lost before the surgery could take place. So, we began with Energy Medicine exercises (Cross Crawl, Crown Pull, Rhythmic 8s, Three Thumps) to make sure her body's energies were operating smoothly. She also combined diet and the EFT tapping technique to continue to drop the needed weight prior to surgery. We incorporated breathing and visualizing exercises during the Reiki sessions: "Breathing in, I open; breathing out, I release." while seeing bright, healing Light moving throughout the body - especially around the knee. EFT tapping techniques were used for instilling positive beliefs that all would be well. Using the head, wrist, knee and ankle points, phrases like these were used: (small sampling) "I let go of all anxiety." Also during the time period prior to surgery, we worked on her sleeping ability and incorporated gratitude to increase the healing potential of all her cells and body systems. (C.M. is also a Reiki practitioner). She was asked to sit quietly, hands in prayer position (Gassho for Reiki practitioners), giving thanks for herself, and all parts of her being. She sent love, thankfulness and respect to her mind and body, ending with a deep cleansing breath and relaxing the hands. Her sleeping ability improved, allowing her healing abilities to improve. During her surgery, I held her (along with all the docs, nurses and technicians) in a Reiki distance healing session. Then came the recovery and continued work at home. C.M. was told at one point that she was at least two weeks ahead of schedule with her flexibility and strengthening work. At one point, C.M. was actually going a little overboard, so we focused again on just being thankful and continuing to trust that all would be well. Tapping was used again to balance her enthusiasm and energy: "I will do only the physical work that is
healthy for me to do today." Suggested phrases to use either with Reiki meditations or tapping or both: "I am thankful for my new knee." Phrases for food anxiety and tiredness during the healing process: "My body can completely process the food
I need to eat right now."
"My body can sleep with comfort and ease." For daily maintenance: "I love my body and am thankful for my body." C.M. continues to make remarkable strides and her doctors and therapists continue to remark how great she is doing. Listen to her words: "The tapping helped me focus helped me slow down and breathe. I could truly feel myself relaxing when I wasn't able to sleep and start yawning and finally fall asleep. I challenge anyone who doesn't believe that preparing the body and mind before surgery helps. I have two friends who had surgery (hip, knee replacements) right after I did and I am amazed at the difference in our recovery. Also spoke with a friend last night who had knee replacement in September and he still doesn't have the flexibility that I do it's because of the help I received before surgery!" All the energy work combined together with physicians, surgeons and physical therapists made for great teamwork!
